Heavy downpours today are bringing the Boston area its wettest day in months as a cold front and rapidly intensifying low-pressure system unleash rounds of drenching rain over New England with strong gusty winds and possible thunderstorms.

The Philadelphia region will see 1 to 3 inches of rain by late afternoon on Wednesday and into the early evening.

Weather Team has declared Wednesday as a Weather Alert Day for heavy rain, gusty winds, and the threat for severe thunderstorms.
