South Korea’s ruling party has thrown its support behind attempts to impeach embattled President Yoon Suk Yeol over his ill-fated decision to declare martial law that sparked a political crisis and widespread public anger in the country.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol's switch from contrition to defiance on Thursday over his martial law order rallied some supporters but other members of his party said it did nothing to sway their view that he must be removed from office.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol survived impeachment on Saturday as all but three members of his People Power Party boycotted the vote, granting the embattled president a temporary reprieve.
