Sony is reportedly giving up on its Spider-Man universe, which includes universally panned films such as Venom and Morbius, as Kraven the Hunter is projected for a worse opening weekend than the disastrous Madame Web.

Sony's Spider-Man Universe added three different spin-offs in 2024 and all of them had a poor critical reception. As Kraven the Hunter joins the likes of Venom, Morbius, and Madame Web, it scored an all-time low in a franchise without much hope to begin with.

A hero is nothing without the villains they face, and few rogues’ galleries are more compelling than Spider-Man ’s. The pantheon of baddies who’ve gone toe-to-toe with the friendly neighborhood webhead is so extensive and memorable that many of them have gone on to star in their own solo comic-book series.

As with Venom and Morbius, robbing Kraven of conflict with Spider-Man mostly means that he shifts from genuine supervillain to semi-generic anti-hero—a superpowered type who kills goons without compunction,
