North Carolina legislative Republicans moved closer Monday to enacting a measure that would erode the powers of the incoming governor and other Democratic officials, and also placing on the ballot constitutional amendments that could buttress GOP voting and tax policies.

The Republican-controlled North Carolina state Senate overrode Gov. Roy Cooper’s (D-NC) veto on a bill that would strip executive power from the state’s newly elected Democrats and give it to state legislators.

After prevailing in a state that went for Republican Donald Trump, Democratic Gov.-elect Josh Stein said that his service as North Carolina's attorney general gave voters confidence and called the Tar Heel state a "bright spot" for Democrats on election night.
